Plant Physiologist (clonal cryobiology)
Shape the future of crop diversity conservation.
USDA’s Agricultural Research Service is recruiting a Research Plant Physiologist at the National Laboratory for Genetic Resources Preservation in Fort Collins, CO. This research position focuses on understanding how living plant cells and tissues survive extreme stresses during preservation and how we can use that understanding to preserve crop diversity more efficiently.
We are looking for a scientist who can bring perspectives from plant cell biology, stress physiology, molecular biology and low temperature biology to investigate the mechanisms underlying injury, survival and recovery during cryogenic preservation. The scientist will have an opportunity to translate fundamental discoveries into broadly applicable cryopreservation technologies for clonally propagated crops.
This is a permanent ARS research position with the opportunity for continued scientific advancement based on the impact of research and offers an opportunity to develop an independent scientific program and build collaborations nationally and internationally to help shape the future of clonal germplasm preservation. A dedicated technician will be hired to support this position.
The position is based at the National Laboratory for Genetic Resources Preservation which serves as the base collection for the National Plant Germplasm System. This position provides access to diverse plant materials and an established network of curators and researchers motivated to solve preservation challenges and support translational science to improve gene banks in the future.
